Bay Area Mongolian Artists: Visions from Afar

12:00 pm–6:00 pm

The exhibition presents the latest works by 3 Mongolian artists who live and work in San Francisco and East Bay. They are: Turburam Sandagdorj (aka Turo), Tamir Sambuu and Enkhbat Batzorig. Showcasing diversity of genres, media, themes, subject matter and styles, the exhibition aims to make a first introduction to Mongolian modern art through the works of these three artists. Turo is known for his paper-cut works that range from large installations to small, minuscule productions of his fine craftsmanship. Tamir, a realist artist and a master of portraiture, here shows some of his charcoal paper works. The youngest among the three, Enkhbat works in the traditional art style called "Mongol Zurag" or "Mongol painting." Even though all three artists come from different backgrounds and are endowed with different experiences, their vision of art is based on Mongolian nomadic heritage, Mongol history, and indigenous religious beliefs.

Archeology of Knowledge: New Archival and Material Discoveries in Mongolia

9:00 am–5:00 pm

Mongol spaces have always been heavily trafficked intersections, sites of mediation, and global circuits of people and exchange in the heart of Asia. Recent archaeological work is shedding new light on Mongolia's complex history. Experts from Mongolia who have been working with excavation sites join Berkeley and other scholars in analyzing their discoveries and the implications for our understanding of Mongolia's past.

This conference, which celebrates the revival of Mongolian studies and language instruction at UC Berkeley, is free and open to the public. Registration is required: please visit http://www.eventbrite.com/e/archaeology-of-knowledge-new-archival-and-material-discoveries-in-mongolia-a-uc-berkeley-event-tickets-17468149706?aff=es2
